The SMS is an option that is only needed if you are going to be using your cell phone for locating. There is a 1 time activation fee of $49.95 that you pay once you receive the unit. You can use your cell phone to locate the device. It will warn you when your GPS enters or leaves any area you’ve defined. It will also alert you when the Panic Alarm has been pressed giving the device’s location, or when the battery is low.
